Normal Behavior
  • They are lovable creatures who are extremely social. They always need company and can get depressed if left alone. Hence, sugar gliders should always be housed in pairs.
  • Male and female sugar gliders can be kept together for them to mate and produce 1 or 2 babies, also called joeys.
  • They are curious and playful pets who love to interact with their cage mates and caregivers.
  • They love to curl up inside pouches. You can get sugar glider pouches from the market.
Diet
  • Sugar gliders are omnivorous in nature. They feed on plant and animal matter.
  • Can be fed with sugar glider pellets available in the market.
  • They need 25% protein- cooked eggs, lean/cooked meat can be given.
  • They also need 25% greens- They love all kinds of fruits and leafy vegetables
  • They graze throughout the day and feed on leaves and grass.
  • Vitamin supplements and high-protein food can be given.
Food items to avoid
  • Chocolates are a big NO when it comes to feeding your sugar glider
  • Steer clear of dairy products like ice cream, cheese or milk. Sugar gliders are lactose intolerant by nature.
  • Ensure that all the vegetables and fruits are washed properly and do not belong to the high-risk category. The high-risk category is the one that has been treated with too much harmful pesticides/ insecticides.
Making A Home
  • Sugar gliders are very active by nature and hence needs a spacious cage for them to easily run around and play.
  • They love jumping and climbing. Hence, keep lots of vertical space in the cage.
  • In case you use a wire mesh cage, the spacing should not be more than ½ inch- 1 inch.
  • If the cage has horizontal bars, the spacing between the bars should not be more than ½ inch.
  • The cage should be away from direct sunlight and should be free of dirt and grime.
  • Add a small bag or pouch inside the cage for them to sleep or hide during day time.
  • The cage should have branches or shelves.
  • You can add common bird toys, and exercise wheels with smooth sides for them to play.
Grooming & Hygiene
  • The cage should be cleaned once every two weeks using a mix of white vinegar and hot water. Never use chemicals as sugar gliders are toxic to them.
  • The cage should be thoroughly rinsed and dried before you place them back inside the cage.
  • Cage pouches and toys should be replaced every week.
  • The cage trays have to be wiped clean on a daily basis.
  • You need not bath the sugar gliders. They are naturally clean and keep themselves clean by grooming each other.
